What do you know about car auctions?
I’m considering buying a new truck and someone recently suggested a car auction. I was wondering what kind of deal you can really get there. Are the prices significantly lower?
–Sounds like I’ve got my answer; that doesn’t sound like something I’d like to get myself into. Thanks!
I found a review of several auto auction and government seized websites. http://www.autoadviceonline.com/Government-Seized-Auto-Auctions.html These sites probabaly have a FAQ page to help you. It looks like they cost a small fee to join, but I couldn’t find any free resources in my searches. Since the inventory is always changing, your annual fee is probably used to employ people to keep the site up to date.

The problem with car auctions is:
1. You don’t know the real condition of the vehicle.
2. How did it end up at the auction? A good vehicle with low mileage would have been retained by the car dealer and sold on their used lot.
3. There’s something wrong with the car. They are sold as is, where is with no warranty of any kind.
4. Prices aren’t that much lower. Expect to pay too much for the value of the vehicle.
Approach with caution. You could get a good deal, you could get a raw deal. Bring a condom in case you get screwed.

As Dan said.
Seeing you are asking, you really should not try to get a vehicle this way. There is no opportunity for a test drive, and often you do not even get to hear the vehicle run. Auctions are where dealers get rid of the cars they accept in trade-in that they do not want on their lots because of various issues.
You do not get the opportunity for Car Fax or similar. There are just so many downsides, that it sounds like you are not prepared to handle.
Good Luck.
