The reason you got the truck so cheaply is that it was sold without a title! In some states you will never be able to put that truck on the road, in others you may be able to get a "bonded" title. To get a bonded title, you have to put up a bond, usually cash, in the amount of the retail value of the vehicle. If there is no ownership claim filed within the prescribed period (usually 2-5 years) then the bond is returned to you.

If you buy something without a title, you should consider it as a parts vehicle, and not expect to be able to register it!

Take the paper you got from the auction to auto licensing place along with the vehicle and that should be all you’ll need. I’ve bought many cars at auction and haven’t had any problems.

Typically, the laws will vary from State to State – where do you live?

I bought a milk truck with the same problem.

I started off at my DMV (or Department of Public Safety) and they did an inspection of the vehicle to prove that I had the VIN number correct. Then you complete a "statement of facts", get an appraisal and then submit it to your DMV or Department of Transportation.

They will then give you a letter stating the amount of bond that you need to supply. Then you take all of the paperwork you have to a local insurance agent that sells bonds (try your OWN local agent or find a local independent agent) and he will issue a bond.

Then you take ALL of the paperwork, including the bond, to your local tax office or vehicle registration authority and file the papers and they will give you your registration and apply for a new title in your name.

Takes a little "legwork" but it’s not too hard!

Good luck and I hope this helps!

As stated above, it differs state to state and sometimes even from DMV to DMV. I had a truck given to me with no title. A year later I went to plate it and the guy who gave it to me was dead. In Michigan I just went to the DMV, filled out a paper explaining why I didn’t apply for the title within the 15 day period and gave them the VIN #. Title came in the mail. Another vehicle I had the same prob. No title and it was an out of state vehicle. I had to have the State Police come and do the VIN check. It immediately came back not stolen so they gave me a paper to take to the DMV.
