Get a basic website, speak to local garages and breakers etc.
Make sure your phone is always on and you always turn up when arranged.
Have fully comp motor trade insurance for your vehicle and any cars you have loaded or have to drive, even if only 100yds. Looking at £1200 - £2000 for insurance.
Even if truck is mot exempt get it tested, dvla/vosa will have your balls on a plate when (not if) they stop you and inspect your vehicle.
If you go more than 100 kilometres / 60 miles away from where truck is registered you have to use tacho so make sure it works properly.
Dont charge too little, phone around for random prices and work out your charges per mile with a minimum charge for local or trade jobs.
Stick at it, be professional, get proper cards printed and hi-vis vest with business name on the back, turning up in tatty jacket and oily jeans with a business card printed on a piece of paper looks naff and will put off potential customers from the start.
Good luck
References :
Own recovery business 3 years

your best bet for regular work is to get in touch with your local motor auction you will have to regester and they will give you a form to fill out you are going to need the correct insurance depending on the auction it will need to be between 20 to 40 grands worth of cover not cheap also i take it it is a beavertail or slide type if this is the case you are going to have to produce an MOT certificate as there are a lot of people out ther operating who wrongly believe that because it says recovery vehicle on the log book that they dont need an mot the only vehicle that is exempt an mot is a spectacle lift recovery truck which doesnt carry the recoverd car on the back but lifts the front or back wheels and tows the recovery another thing you could do is put an ad in the paper to collect scrap cars and wiegh them inyou get an average of 100 quid for a motor
