You have probably heard of people buying cars at government auctions for amazingly low prices. Even on nice cars, the bids start very low – often in the hundreds of dollars. People really do buy nice cars for very low prices, because the government, whether a local police department or a national agency like the DEA, wants to unload these cars to avoid having to pay for storage and maintenance for them. Seasoned car dealers often buy cars at these auctions, and for obvious reasons, they keep quiet about this great source of good pre-owned cars. But in many cases, you can bid on cars too, whether online or at a live auction.

You may have thought about buying a car at an auction, but were turned off by some of the disadvantages. But think again: there has never been a better time to buy at an auction, not just because of the enormous selection of cars, but also because of the wealth of information you can gain beforehand to ready yourself for the process. Here are three common concerns about car auctions and why you should consider an auction anyway.

1. Cars are sold “as is.” While there may be a three month guarantee that a car runs, you can’t exactly exchange it or return it for a refund. That means you have to be sure up front that you won’t be wasting money on a defective vehicle. Here’s how to do that: get a CarFax or other history of the car beforehand. At a live auction, give the vehicle as detailed a vehicle inspection as you can. If you can bring a mechanic, or even someone you know who works on their own car, that’s even better because they will know what things to look for, like signs of flooding or water damage. And you can always copy the VIN and have someone at home ready to get a history report on the car for you.

2. Live auctions can be intimidating for beginners. It may be hard for you to keep up with the auction pace. There are several ways you can address this. You could attend a couple of auctions just to watch, so you can get a feel of the pace and watch what car dealers do when they bid. Some online informational sites have free material to educate you on how to participate in live auctions. And if you’re sure that a live auction just isn’t for you, there are many online auctions in which you can bid.

3. Time and sales pressure discourage you from trying. There is a lot involved in successfully bidding on a car at an auction. Finding the auction, registering, visually inspecting the car, being ready with a down payment, and following up with the balance of payment are all time-consuming tasks. And you must be prepared to move fast, so you’re under pressure. Again, online auctions are one solution to your concerns. But also, researching the make and model you’re interested in, and knowing in advance how high you’re willing to go on the models you might bid on will help you remain calm in what may seem a chaotic environment.

If you like the idea of buying a car at an auction, you probably still have concerns about the process. Gathering as much information in advance as possible, being ready with a down payment, and knowing your own bidding limits could help you save thousands of dollars on the car you’ve always dreamed of.

Manheim, a subsidiary of Cox Enterprises (which also owns several newspapers, television and radio networks, and Internet technology platforms) is the world’s biggest automobile auction chain. Of course, this is more than just the occasional car auction here and there. Manheim employs 34,000 workers and has 140 different operating locations. Manheim helped 10 million cars change hands in 2008 alone, with transactions totaling more than $50 billion.

Manheim runs auctions for car dealers only, with cars usually available from a number of categories, including used cars more than four years old that major dealers don’t want; exotic cars from collector dealers; used rental cars from rental car agencies; trade-ins dealers have taken of brands they do not normally sell; and cars returned at the end of leases.

Manheim continues to extend its global reach through innovative technology, and serves the car “remarketing” industry in more than a dozen countries, including China. Both live auctions and online auctions are part of Manheim’s operation, bringing together volume buyers, sellers, banks, car rental agencies, government agencies, and carmakers in a vast automotive marketplace.

Actually, “vast” may be an understatement. Every year people buy 40 million used cars, which is three times the number of new cars bought. In 2008 36.5 million used vehicles were sold, compared with 13.2 million new ones.

Businesses like Manheim have a long list of services, including getting the cars together, writing condition reports, advertising the wholesale auctions with dealers, and reporting results of their auctions. These outfits also have facilities for complete body work for high volume dealers of used cars. In 2007, Manheim opened an enormous reconditioning center with state of the art technology and environmental improvements such as the use of water based paints.

Manheim is great at what it does, which is help cars change hands. In fact, it does it so well that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in 2000 ordered it to sell off nine auctions in seven markets. This was after Manheim bought ADT Auctions, which used to be a subsidiary of Tyco International, and the U.S.’s third largest automobile auction chain. One of the dealers Manheim was ordered to divest itself of was in Phoenix, Arizona, where Manheim had a monopoly on car wholesale auctions. In the FTC’s ruling, Manheim had to sell eight ADT auctions and Manheim’s auctions in Phoenix to an Indianapolis company called ADESA in order to restore competition to those nine regions.

Ordinary folks can’t go to Manheim’s auctions. They are for registered car dealers only, and being registered isn’t necessarily an easy thing to do. While these are great places to buy cars, your only real shot at getting a car from them is if you happen to know a registered dealer who is willing get an advanced list and bid on your behalf. Of course, you’ll want to pay the dealer for going to the trouble, but it could still be a great way to get a good car at a great price.

If you are interested in purchasing a car at a government or other auction, hopefully you’ve done your homework about how the auction process works, the terms of sales, and arranging for full payment after you’ve put down a deposit on a bid you’ve won. Here are ten tips for buying a car at an auction. Some apply more to online auctions and some apply to live auctions, but you should be prepared either way.

1. Don’t bid against a seasoned car collector unless you happen to be very wealthy. Collectors can be doggedly determined to get a certain car, and are sometimes willing to bid more than the car’s original value. Of course, if it ends up being priceless, they’ve still made a good investment. Seriously, experienced car collectors play hardball, and you don’t want to bid against them unless you have plenty of money and know what you’re doing.

2. Get a report on the car’s history. Sometimes auctions will provide these, but sometimes you have to get the information yourself. If you look over cars at a government auction a couple of days before the actual bidding, you’ll have time to do this. If not, perhaps you could have someone at home who can go online and check a VIN for you. It may be $30 or so, but it could save you major headaches if a car has been flood damaged or rebuilt.

3. Check out auction sites to see how much cars you’re interested in generally go for. You won’t get a car from a government auction for as little as you would for a wholesale auction, but you can still get a good deal.

4. Make sure you have enough money to bid. This seems blindingly obvious, but people do get caught up in the bidding process. You’ll have to put down a cash deposit the day of the auction, and then you’ll have a day or two to come back and pay the rest. Make sure you have the money at hand to do this.

5. Retiring government vehicles have generally been well maintained, serviced, and cleaned. In fact, you may be able to get a copy of the maintenance history.

6. Repossessed vehicles or vehicles confiscated over drug or tax matters could have rough histories. You definitely want to run a VIN check for a car that was seized in this way.

7. Determine to the best of your ability whether an auction has run a thorough title check on a car. You do not want to buy a car at any price when you don’t know if it has a clean title.

8. Factor in other costs when determining how high you will bid. There may be a “buyer’s premium” of 5 to 10%. If so, be sure to calculate this in when deciding your highest bid.

9. Cars from rental agencies are usually maintained, clean, and only a couple of years old. These can be great choices, but you probably won’t get a former rental car dirt cheap.

10. If you get a bad feeling from an auction, or about a particular car, listen to your gut. You have very little recourse if you buy a car at auction and it breaks down the next day.

If you do some research up front, know your bidding limits, have the necessary funding, and are able to keep a cool head in a fast-paced situation, you could do quite well buying a car at an auction.

Three Reasons to Buy a Vehicle History Report on a Used Car

In the couple of years following Hurricane Katrina you probably heard frightening accounts of people unwittingly purchasing cars that had been damaged by flood waters. Flood damage can be easy enough to hide from the average consumer, but the damage is permanent and often progressive. While the so-called “Katrina cars” are starting to disappear from the scene, particularly at car auctions, you still run the risk of buying a car that has damage that is not readily apparent.

Any time you’re buying a used car, it is a good idea to buy a vehicle history report on the car you are interested in. Here are three reasons to invest in this type of report.

1. For the cost of around $30 to $50 you have the potential to save yourself a multi-thousand dollar headache that would come with a car with undisclosed damage. A vehicle history increases the chances of making you aware if a car has been salvaged, had frame damage, been rebuilt, been in accidents, had water damage, fire damage, or any other damage. While there is no “used car lemon law,” you can find out if it was declared a “lemon” when it was new.

2. A vehicle history report will let you know if the odometer has been rolled back, if the odometer is broken, or if the car has excessive mileage. You’ll also find out if it has been stolen, or used as a taxi. With some reports you can do a title search to make sure that the car has a clean title. This is especially important if you’re buying a seized car at a government auction.

3. A vehicle history report gives you exactly what you need to either negotiate a price, or know your bidding limits. Information is your best friend when you’re buying a used car. With a used car dealer, don’t forget that they are in business to make a profit, not to make your life easier. With auctions – particularly government auctions – the goal is to get the vehicles off the lot so that the government can stop paying for storage and maintenance. While you can get good deals at government auctions, in general you should consider it a “buyer beware” situation, particularly with cars that have been seized for drug or income tax reasons.

There is always some risk when you buy a new car. Even if you know the owner, you may not know how well the car was maintained. The number of miles on the odometer is important, but so are the conditions under which those miles were driven. While a report on a car’s history based on its vehicle identification number (VIN) can’t tell you what kind of driver the previous owner was, it can sometimes tell you whether the vehicle has undergone any disaster: fire, flood, accidents that should cause you to look elsewhere. You can also purchase a title history, which will give you the peace of mind of knowing the car has a clean title. That’s very valuable knowledge for the price of one tank of gas.

MLG&W publishes information about their surplus fleet equipment auctions at the appropriate time before they plan to hold them.

Your best bet will be to contact them directly to inquire. I’d suggest the contact provided on a previous MLG&W auction brochure, (901) 528-4248.

I’m looking for something a friend refrenced, but gave me the wrong number for. The number now refers to a motorcycle instead of what I was looking for.

Go to Advanced Search. Check the box for completed listings. Ask your friend ahead of time if they remember the listing title.

eBay rarely recycles item numbers. Typo is more likely the answer.

Also, if the auction in question violated eBay Terms Of Service in ANY way and was pulled *for said violation* there will be NO RECORD of it anywhere. Nada.

My idea is this: We spent $19 billion a year in foreign aid. Not to mention the $34 billion we spend in Iraq. That $19 billion is spent on very little for the population, alot is laundered and skimmend off the top to corrupt politicians. We brake down the amount we spend on each country, then reserve 10% +/- of each countries aid and set it aside. This money is reserved to buy vehicles for each countries infrastructure and public works systems. It would allow countries who normally don’t have a decent motorized public servant service to have at least decent if not excellent forms of emergency vehicles. This would also help in making sure that this money that is being spent, is being spent not only for the good of the people, but it is being used to buy our goods and services. A money cycle so to speak. Lets say a country gets $100 million in aid, we set aside $1 million for my proposal. Using known gov data, and this is not a cheap vehicle used for the example, a 3/4 ton 4×4 suburban cost the government $28k. At a million bucks set aside for vehicles, thats 35 trucks! For one country! Now imagine amount of vehicles that could be bought if they were buying Impalas or Fusions or Sebrings. At 10% of $19 billion thats almost 68,000 vehicles at $28k a piece. We are going to continue the foreign aid programs so why not help both parties out? If we do it every year, then eventually each country will have an outstanding infrastructure of emergency and public works vehicles. After 5 years, these countries can start auctioning off the vehicles to their public, any funds to be used for goods and services. And this program could be used for our municipalities as well. This to me seems like a more viable way to help the auto industry and struggling cities and towns that cant afford vehicles. What do you think?
By your analogy, we should just give them the money and not have them build cars? Basically a public funded jobs bank for an entire company? We as government entities have to buy American made vehicles when possible anyways by law(I have done purchasing for the county I work for), so we are supporting the auto companies anyhow. The only thing different is we are using foreign aid money to support the auto industry. It is not going to make the industry independantly strong with the foreign aid, but it helps. Since we have to buy American by law, and the bailout money is going to other things less viable, why not help the local governments?
I guess I dont get the whole pay a car company not to build cars. So, if they are not building cars but getting money for not building cars, then they dont need workers so they are now out of a job. At least this way, there is still a job for people. But my point to this is that our aid does get spent on vehicles in these countries, just not our companies vehicles. Our aid money is spent on other countries vehicles.

See, the thing is, public safety vehicles are replaced every 4-5 years anyways. Money is ear marked for the purchase of these vehicles which means other public works projects will be put on hold to afford the new vehicles.

It’s actually more wasteful than just giving them the money, believe it or not. The reason the car companies are in trouble is because they can’t produce cars that anyone wants at a price that anyone is willing to pay. Each car they build that someone doesn’t want to pay full price for is a net loss to our economy. So your plan helps the auto industry just as much, but burdens the economy with more inefficient production than just giving them money would.

Suppose I’m a painter making paintings that nobody wants. If you give me money, I’ll be happy, and I’ll have no need to paint. But if you buy lots of my paintings, yes I’ll be happy, but I’ll also be wasting paint and canvas that other people could use to make great masterpieces. So you help me the same amount, but hurt everyone else more.

Bluntly, the best choice for the country would be to let the US automakers collapse. But that will cause a lot of short-term pain, and now’s a really bad time for additional short-term pain.

Now’s a terrible time to lose your job, with unemployment at record highs. And the housing market makes it very hard to sell your house to meet urgent expenses now. To complete the triple-whammy, many people have seen their retirement accounts wiped out, which means they can’t afford to retire until the stock market rebounds.

Really, your suggestion boils down to two things:

1) Bailing out the automakers by buying cars rather than giving them cash. I think I explained why this makes things worse.

2) Paying for the automakers bailout from foreign aid money rather than the treasury. That’s fine, but it’s more honest to argue something like, "with the economy the way it is, we can’t afford as much foreign aid was we used to". The problem is that the bad economy is hurting other countries too, and reducing aid when things are bad makes things even worse. The worst thing a government can do is reduce services when the economy is bad.

I am planning my engagement party. does anyone have any ideas for games or giveaways? it is to b held the end of july at a lake. we have a pavillion reserved and will just have a cookout w/ hamburgers hot dogs chips sausage potatoe salad etc. i want cheap and simple but nice. well have a boat and theres swimming and playareas and sand. Now I am going to provide ice water lemonade and iced tea is it wrong to tell guests if they want soda to bring their own? its just it is expensive and some ppl r hoggish about it. i will provide a cooler w/ ice for their soda but i am recommending they mark their names on it. is this cheap or wrong for me to do? also, would it b lame if i decorated the tables w/ baskets w/ fresh cut wild flowers and deep candle holders w/ tea candles (so they wont blow out for when it gets close evening). what do u think about have 50/50’s or chinese auctions. we just 2wnat to have a fun time. open to all suggestions! thnks!

First of all, congratulations on your upcoming nuptials! An engagement party should be primarily a way for family and friends to come together to celebrate the good news and the happy couple. How you choose to do it really is about what you want to do, how big your budget is and the intention of your party. Having a lakeside bash during the month of July sounds like a wonderful idea, especially since you are planning a barbecue and swim party as well. Here are some ideas to consider:

1. Dress up your hot dogs and hamburgers by also having some interesting breads and rolls to choose from. Consider alternative condiments in addition to your traditional ketchup, mustard, and relish. You might want to go with creamy horseradish sauce, chili sauce, blue cheese etc. to add some zing and personality to your meats.
2. Wild flowers in baskets are a perfect accompaniement to your outdoor theme. You might also want to conside floating candles, or even citronella candles in cute metal containers to ward off the evening bug fest that lakes always seem to get. You might also invest in some of the small lanterns they have at variety stores to add to the festive mood. Hanging white lights in the trees adds atmosphere and a magical feeling as well.
3. What you might want to consider is offering your guests their choice of iced tea, lemonade, bottled water and a wine based punch, as well as ice for any and all drinks they want to bring themselves. I think that sodas on a hot evening aren’t nearly as refreshing as iced tea and lemonade are anyway. And, you don’t have to apologize to anyone about your choice of beverages. Just let everyone know that if they want to bring something extra, its on them.
4. How about purchasing some extra fireworks on the 4th of July to do at your party? Some states have laws about using them after the 4th, so you ought to check and see what yours offers.
5. You might want to offer toasts to your respective families and ask someone(s) to offer anecdotes about how you and your fiance met, humourous stories and such to add to the entertainment of the evening. My husband got his CDL for us to travel but I got sick. Now I am well & he doesn’t have enough experience. We drive some cars locally for dealers who sell cars to people who buy them to sell at auction. What kind of driving job can he get where I can go with him & we can travel the country. It does not have to require CDL but he is qualified for that? Thank you!

look into the house whole moving companies sometime they have bob truck loads where your husband would be the main person and driver and you would be the one to inspect and pact and count for and tag everthing you would work as a team some short haul and some long distance good luck

I’m looking to get a bike with a salvage title (good way to save some money because most bikes are considered totaled with a little bit of rash on the fairings).
So, where do you buy a salvage bike in Texas? auction, salvage yard, etc.

You can find them all over the internet, including Ebay. Remember that the reason these are salvage is that they were highly damaged in the eyes of an insurance company. For this reason they need to be titled, and this can be done, although they have to be inspected prior to being titled.
I would search under yahoo/google under "Texas Salvage Motorcycle".
I would try not to bite off more than you can chew when considering these motorcycles, unless you intend on buying parts. If the frame is bent, you will need to buy a new one, unless you think you can straighten it. This can be quite a task; a friend did this with a Yamaha V star 1100 but only by building a rig out of heavy lumber, and using heavy come-alongs and a laser level to gauge the straightness of the frame. It was a bear, and he has sworn never again. lol
Look for bikes with cosmetic problems: smashed tank, bent fenders, ect. You might find you can find these parts on Ebay and be very happy.

I just bought the boat on auction and no one there could give me any info it is 1982 Mercury Black Max V150
I assume it is a two stroke as I can find no oil reservoir on the motor. Also no where on the motor is it stamped oil injected.

The mixture is 50 parts gasoline to 1 part 2 stroke oil.

I just bought a 1982 chevy full size pickup at a police auction but it didnt have any keys with it so i was planing on swaping out the ignition but i cant do that untill i get the pickup to my house my friend said i should use a screwdrive and pop it anyways how would i go about doing that just put the screwdriver in and hit it with a hammer or what?

Use a dent puller to pop the ignition cylinder, insert screwdriver and turn…then you will be able to take the column apart, remove the ignition cylinder and get a new one on the cheap. Dent puller maybe a little odd, but the only other way of getting the ignition out without breaking it would be to call a locksmith who will probably cut a new key.
The key has to be in the ON position to get the cylinder out using a torx head screwdriver. You do not have to remove the steering wheel, just the column cover.
They are only like $12 at my local parts store.

There are easier ways to do it…but complete destroy the plastic around the column.

Am trying to start a small business from reselling motorcycles/atvs in CA.

The used motorcycle market is not large enough to generate used bike auctions similar to the used car auctions you find in every major city. Most motorcycle dealers who do end up taking used bikes in on trade keep them for their own inventory. If you want to find inventory for your used bike store, you’ll have to do it the old fashioned way… One bike at a time from individual sale ads.

Im going to open a used car dealership that sells mostly japenese import cars such as honda, acura, toyota. But im also going to have trucks and crotch rockets. Im going to buy modifications in bulk and install them myself to lower the price. modifications like body kits, sound systems, drifting kits, rims, lambo doors, under car lights.

each car will only get a few modifications to make it stand out from the normal as well as any touch ups to make it sell at the highest possible price. Im not trying to make these cars brand new but im trying to exploit the ‘fast and the furious’ niche that teenagers and mexicans love.
Im going to buy the cars at auctions and government auctions/government impound lots.

For the first few years it will be me doing most of the work, running the business, car salesman, and auto mechanic (i have extensive car knowledge). Once the business is on its feet im going to customise the cars.
People go out to the car lot, find a car, we go inside and they customise which parts they want on the car, i install them and notify them when the car is ready in a few weeks-month.

cars im going to be selling are mitsubishi eclipse, toyota celica, honda S2000, nissian skyline, mazda rx-7, nissian 350z, honda prelude. f-150 with lift kit and tires. Crotch rockets are going to be pretty much sold as is.

A full list of the modifications available are. lambo doors, suicide doors, floating hood, reverse hood, flip hood, body kits, gauges, gull wing doors, push button start, indigo light gauges, rims, ferrari doors, angel eye headlights, drifting kits, smoke machine, exaust systems, tinted windows, racing seats, lowered suspension, ground effects packages.

sounds like a good idea mail me and i can def help with bits from the UK big car scene here full of imports and skyline bits etc.and have plenty of friends in Japan.

The reason you got the truck so cheaply is that it was sold without a title! In some states you will never be able to put that truck on the road, in others you may be able to get a "bonded" title. To get a bonded title, you have to put up a bond, usually cash, in the amount of the retail value of the vehicle. If there is no ownership claim filed within the prescribed period (usually 2-5 years) then the bond is returned to you.

If you buy something without a title, you should consider it as a parts vehicle, and not expect to be able to register it!

I’m wondering if this is a requirement for buying both cars and motorcycles.

No. Police auctions are open to the public. So anyone can buy from them. BUT you do need a dealer’s license if you plan on buying and then selling more than 3 vehicles a year. They aren’t cheap. And you have to go through an extensive background investigation. If you decide not to get a dealer’s license and sell more than the limit, the DMV will catch up to you and make you pay some extremely high penalty fees.

I am planning on buying a car this year, I was exploring the net and I found a government auction that has reposes cars, trucks, SUV, boats, homes and property, all of these things were taken from people by the police, IRS etc, it ask for you to join for $29.95 a year, do anyone know about the government auction and is it good.

Its said to sell cars for 90% of retail price and bids starts as low as $100.00

most cars they sell are only worth $100-$1000 since they get you from A-B but have missing doors, windows, interiors are wrecked. Think about it, more than half of the vehicles were seized b/c drugs were inside and they were destroyed during police searches, as far as running they don’t care.

Define a "reliable" auction.

If you’re talking about a police auction, consider the source. They’re all vehicles that have been impounded. So, either they’re cars left on the side of the road, vehicles seized during drug busts, etc. All that they’ve done, is clean them up somewhat, and put them on the auction block.

That said, it’s not their personal vehicles. They don’t care what condition they’re in, because it’s total profit anyway.

Plus, just because they’re advertised at $500 Police Auction, that’s just the starting bid. Most times than not, the vehicles go for close to what you would pay for them anyway. There’s really no benefit to it.

If she wants to buy a used vehicle, buy it from a person, not an auction.

It will be auctioned off from my understanding along with other properties to repay a loan. But is this legal if there is a lienor? What happens? Can the lienor reclaim the rights to the liened property (motorcycle?)

JB above me is correct that your father in law can claim the bike as the guarantor of the loan, but he would have to pay the full amount owed up front to do so.

Assuming that he is not going to do so, the bike will be sold at public auction with the loan company taking whatever amount is offered. The balance now between what they collected at the sale ( which is usually just a fraction of what the bike is worth on the open market) and the amount still outstanding on the loan is what the guarantor ( your father in law) is going to be billed for. If he doesnt pay, he will have his credit ruined plus the loan company will sue him in court .

Unfortunately, this is what happens when someone assumes being guarantor of a loan that goes into collection.

Where to find a new car for auction in California?

Does anyone know how and where i can go to find a new car for auction? i’m not asking for used or government seized vehicle with good mileage but something brand spanking new. I heard that since the auto industry are closing down some of their cars are sent out for auction. and that is exactly where i want to be/go. any tips/advice would be great. thanks a bunch.

I’m in the car business in California. I have not heard anything about new cars being auctioned off, at least not to the public.

When a dealership shuts down, the manufacturer takes the new cars back. They will then sell them to other dealers that are still in business. They MIGHT auction them to these dealers, but not to the public. That would destroy their other dealers and their brand, as who would shop at their dealers anymore, if people could just "bid" on the brand new cars at auction?

The more I think about it, the more I am sure that there is no such public auction.

The marina won’t accept my boat??

I have the option right now to get a 30′ 1982 Penn Yan fly bridge boat for super cheap because it was abandoned. I have until Saturday morning to make the deal or it will be sold at auction, so I am kind of anxious. It is a very well taken care of boat, the outside is beautiful (hardly looks used) and while the interior is slightly dated, it is really clean and nice. So here I am calling all these marinas in Maryland and NO ONE will take me and my boat!!! One marina said because it’s fiberglass over wood and they don’t take those anymore. And the other marinas didn’t bother to explain why. Does anyone know what is up with that silly rule? The boat is beautiful!! What do I do? I am still calling marinas, but I am just so confused.

Welcome to the world of "big" boating… Where the Marina is King, Emperor, and Ruler. And you (we) my friend, are his low life subjects to be used, abused, and taken advantage of… But, all is not bad – when they do finally fix our boat and get it running again – we worship the ground they walk on. And in fact, we don’t throw rose pedals at their feet – we throw our money… lol

First of all… I am guessing that you approached the Marina with the same enthusiam and "anxiousness" as you did here – with your question. Big Mistake! Marinas don’t want new, enthusiastic, anxious, first time boaters in their marina… unless they are brand new boaters with brand new boats – then they know they take ‘em for even more money.

Second… I am also guessing, that you told them about your wonderful "find" of this beautiful gem that has been abandon. Another mistake! You may see it as a gem – they see it as a big piece of sinking or sunken junk taking up valuable slip space,

SUGGESTION: Calmly, cooly, just call, or go to their office and inquire about avaliable slip space for a 30 footer – your question should be do they have any, and at what price… and ask to see a Marina fee schedule (that’s like a menu that has all their fees for everything they do… ) Act like a boat, a slip, boating in general – is no big deal to you.

If they ask you about the boat – tell them you will have to ask your husband or father… you just need to know if they have a slip. Once you know that – your in… ask them what you have to do to have them hold it for you for a day or two… then, take it from there. Don’t give them the option of closing the door on you based on the age of your boat.

As far as your delimna with your 30′ 1982 Penn Yan goes… First of all let me say – you should never be nearly so "anxious" to buy a used boat. So, the bottom line is that (as bad, or as horrific, as it may seem) the Marina may have just done you a really big, big, favor.

Honestly, I was on site once, watching, as a Certified Marine Surveyor was surveying just such a boat – the boat was 20 years old but looked like a real gem. In fact, it had a brand new professional exterior paint job done by the Marina.
The buyer was about as "anxious" and hot to trott to buy this boat as ever I had seen… That was just before, I watched the surveyor gently, but with a little effort, push his thumb (thumb first, then fist and arm) clear through the boats’ hull. He bet the "seller" who was there, he could do it – and the seller took him up on the bet. The fact is, the guy at the Marina who told you it was because it was fiberglass over wood – probably said that because it was the first lie he could think of. As in fact, probably half the boats in the marina will be all, or in part, at least part of it, fiberglass over wood – certainly in the larger ones with larger cabins.
He was probably just being nice… He could have just as easily said he wasn’t going to rent you a slip because he didn’t like your looks, or your hair, or your socks… or that he just didn’t want any more old boats in his marina.
Sorry, but, that is the cruel hard facts. There are in fact a whole lot more boats then Marina slip space… especially true in your area – so they can be very picky and snobish.
As the saying goes – "If ever a good hearted honest man owned a Marina – he’d be a billionaire the very day the word got out."

My problem with this, really, is not at all the Marina – as I am used to seeing all that… (I live full time on my boat at one.)
My problem with his – for your sake – is your being so "anxious" to buy a used boat – So, as bad as I hate the way you were treated, fact is, they probably (inadvertedly) did you a big favor, if they prevented you from buying the boat.

The only auctions you, as a private individual (a non-dealer) can participate in are those held by municipal or government agencies selling-off their old vehicles or asset seizures, or certain private auction companies that specifically deal in auctioning-off repossessed or salvaged (yet operable) vehicles. The main auctions where most dealers buy their vehicles (like Manheim etc.) are generally restricted to licensed car dealers.

Most auction companies and government agencies either hold auctions at certain intervals or announce in advance when they do. There’s no "master list" of auctions, but this is where the internet is so handy as it’s very easy to search for "used car auction los angeles" or any other agency (like DEA, sheriff’s office, etc.) to help you find the best auction to suit your needs.

Whether or not you get a "good deal" depends entirely upon who happens to show-up that day. If you happen to be the only person interested in a particular vehicle, while unlikely, you can walk away with an absolute deal of the century. On the other hand, all it takes is one other person who wants the same vehicle as badly as you and prices can quickly skyrocket.

It’s very easy for novice bidders to get emotional and "chase the bid" only to find themselves left having bought a vehicle for much more than they otherwise would have. While great deals can be had, they’re not guaranteed, nor is there any assurance that any steals will exist on any given day. Patience, flexibility, and the discipline to "let go" what may be a very nice vehicle in favor of the likelihood for a different, better, opportunity is essential.

I bought my truck from a dealer that buys cars from auctions and repo lots and "spruces" them up a little to sell them. It didn’t come with the original key, just a copy and not even that fits perfectly. I want to know if maybe my truck had keyless entry and I just didn’t get the remote, how can I tell? Thanks!
It is a 2001 Dodge Dakota. I can get a new OEM remote online for 12 dollars, I just want to know if the rest it already there.

the only way you can find out for sure is call a dealer and give them the serial number off the vehicle and let the run the number and they can give you a read out of what options it came with,and most of the time its free through most dealers,there’s no need to buy a remote though for it until you know for sure,good luck.

We are going to have a auction to help raise money, but we need some ideas on what to auction this year. It’s usually at the city park but this year we are going to have it out in the country. it’s called "hogs in the country"

What you do is go to your membership and talk to them about where they work and see if they can get items donated. Items that are donated are then auctioned, keeping in mind the wealth of the group that is expected,if a cross section of the community then anything will be grabbed up. An auction takes lead time and can not be set up on a whim,6 or 8 months should do it now is the time to think about the end of summer. Contact the local businesses and see what you can gather travel agents sponsor trips airlines have empty seats so they donate seats on some flights golf courses may donate a set. You could go on and on, your target group is what decides what will sell the best.

It is looking increasingly like none of us will get a pension in years to come, so I have been toying with the idea of buying to let for some time. However, even the cheaper houses, reposessions and buying at auction cost so much now that any feasible rents wouldn’t cover the mortgage payments. So, is it really wise to buy to let now, or have we missed the boat?

Let me start by saying that we (myself, my brother and my father) currently own 37 single family rental properties.

The best way to overcome the issue you are talking about is to buy rundown properties for below market value and fix them up yourself. This takes cash and usually a lot of it. It’s not uncommon for us to spend 10-15K(and in some cases much more) refurbishing a property after we buy it (new siding, roof, carpeting, appliances, etc).

The second problem you will run into is actually finding the properties to buy. We spend hours just driving around and looking for investment properties. We have also developed relationships with local real estate agents and property managers so that we get a phone call when something interesting comes on the market.

The third problem is that it is extremely difficult to make any money owning just one or 2 properties.

If you only have one then if it goes empty for 3 or 4 months you have a cash flow problem. If you have 10 that is not so much of an issue as you can leverage the money from the other units.

Your fourth problem is going to be time. Remember that everytime a pipe breaks or a sewer overflows, you get a phone call from the renter. If you know how to fix it (and can afford to take the day off work) great. If you don’t, thats your entire month’s rent shot on the plumber.

If you are interested in this business for the long term and want to grow, it’s a great business and it’s still very viable to get into.

If all you are looking for is to own one or 2 and stay small, I would strongly suggest looking at a different investment.

He has also accrued an $80,000 debt to the Franchise Tax Board and $10,000 to the EDD.He has no intention of following through with his financial agreements and has closed his bank accounts to avoid levies and has incorporated his business as an attempt to protect his insurance commissions.So… he has "no money" but just put $8,000 down on a new truck and continues to spend hundreds/thousands every month at gun and jewelry auctions…would this be considered enough info to blow the whistle on him?

IRS is aware he owes, my concern here is how are you getting paid? and are you sure he is reporting the correct information (W2) for you to IRS every year. You could end up thinking the W2 if he is giving you one at the end of the year matches what he is reporting to the IRS.
You could end up with a CP2000 for underreported income.
Watch out and start looking for another job.

I’m planning to commute 8 miles each way every day by boat, and have placed a bid in an auction on a runabout with a 50HP Mercury outboard, two-stroke.
It’s a planing hull with a windscreen, 5 metres long, and I suppose I wouldn’t go full-throttle, just enough to go into planing mode, and then cruise along like that.
The boat comes with a 20L (5 gallon) tank. Would I be walking to the petrol station with that on a daily basis?

You’ll probably be burning around 6 to 8 gallons per hour, so the key here is what the planing speed of the hull is. Planing boats are not a particularly fuel-efficient breed; a displacement hull is much more efficient provided you keep the speed (and the wake) down. Without seeing the boat or knowing the condition of the motor, I’d guess that you will be making regular trips to the fuel dock. 4-stroke engines are more fuel efficient, and ripping everything that is not essential out of the boat to reduce weight will help. The truck was given to me as a work truck by my boss. His company closed down and he moved out of state and told me to keep the truck as payment for back wages. After the registration expired Its been 5 years sitting in my driveway and he wont send me the title. How can I get the title without having the state impound and auction it?

If you want to keep the truck, you or he could request a duplicate title online and have it mailed to your boss, then have him sign it over to you and mail the title to you. It costs money but not a lot.

If you want the truck to be gone, you could call a towing company to junk it. They may charge you money but you could take him to small claims to recover. Or you could call the police, the tow company will take it, and they’ll bill your boss for the tow and junk.

hey, im looking for a police auction to buy a used car. my car sucks, its an 1986 chrysler lebaron convertible with EVERYTHING wrong with it. so im looking to buy a newer mustang convertible. they are so expensive. my buddy at work told me he bought a motorcycle in another state through a police auction for cheap. so my question is where can i find a local one?

From my own personal experiences I think they should NOT be bailed out. Who’s bailing me out and giving me a new job? I got laid off in the construction industry recently and got behind on my truck payments, even part time night job wasn’t enough to save my truck from being repossessed. I bought the truck for $25,000 for a six year loan put $10,000 down to make sure I’d pay it off sooner and have smaller payments, I had 2 years left to pay it off and was only 2 payments behind. General Motors/ Chevrolet repossessed my truck in the night and took it to a place 300 miles a way and sold it in one week for like $3,000 at an auto auction and didn’t even try to work out a deal with me to so I could keep my truck. Even tho I put all that money into it….. GM can lose it all, I don’t care cause now I’m on a bike and searching for work still in this F**ked up economy. P.s. that truck was really paid for if you think about all the money I put in it, besides the dealers fee’s and interest on the financing….

no we should not. i agree. my hubby lost his job in the rv industry. yeah now we cant even get a job a buger king. everyone working these big jobs at monoco now take up the petty jobs, it is not fair that WE have to pay 720 billion dollars to people who dont even derserve it. while we are barely making ends meet, the big banks get to go on very expensive spa treatments. im not gonna lose my car cuz i bought that cash. but you are right who IS gonna bail us out?? not Bush. no he only cares about himself and his oil. i hope Obama can do a better job than the crap we have now. im pissed and there is nothing we can do about it. you are right let everyone lose everything. they got themselves in this mess and it is not fair that we the americans have to bail out asses who cant control their spending so let them rot there is always going to be a car maker. not from america? oh well american should of thought of that before they decided to make these hummers and suburbans and all these big ass cars. no one cares for us little people. im sry to hear about your truck. it happened to a friend of mine. 2 payments is not that bad. i mean if you were like 6 then yeah. but america is a bunch of gready bastards i hate to say it but i dont think im proud to be an american anymore. i have nothing to be proud of. we are in sooooooo much debt to china. so instead of bailing out these a holes we should of paid them back. GRRRRRRRR!!!!!!

The house is listed for a quick sale at right below 200,000-too much for us. Home will go to auction in August. Home is in Putnam County IN, has 10 acres, 3 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, 3 car attached garage, bonus room. There is no central air, all flooring needs to be replaced, kitchen is outdated, roof appears to need some work, needs painted on inside and out, some holes in siding, missing light fixtures on garage and the ones that are there do not match, outside and inside trim missing, no railing on staircase, no dishwasher, appliances included are very outdated, behind house is old boat, lots of trash, old motors and a very rundown shed, and the kitchen floor has a mysterious bump in it(possible foundation issue). All these things were noticed during an informal 5 minute tour of the property. Any help anyone can give us in coming up with a reasonable offer will be greatly appreciated. Our realtor is the listing agent on the property so we aren’t expecting much help from him.

Hard to answer, but here is how I would approach it.

Try to figure out what a comparable house in the Indianapolis area would go for on a standard lot. Pick a house in decent condition. I might used Greencastle or Danville area. Then try to add to that what you feel the extra 9 or more acres is worth. Then discount from that total what the repair and upgrades for things like A/C are going to cost ($30k-$40k ???).

Also, consider that the housing market is not real great right now. And not a lot of people want to live that far out in the country. It’s just too far to drive to work!

It doesn’t really hurt that much to low-ball in this market. The worst they can do is say no and it will likely result in a counteroffer that will give you a better idea of their rock bottom price.

Everyone says to get another realtor. I don’t know that I necessarily agree with that. Realtors can represent both sides in Indiana, it is legal. Yes, he will not give you much help on an offer price, but if you can figure that out yourself, then no big deal. Your offer may be more indicative of what you can afford rather than what the house is worth anyway! And trust me, any realtor is going to have a hard time appraising that property.

A realtor can charge the seller anything he wants. If he knows that he will not be having to split a commission with your realtor, he can charge the seller less overall for the services, even if he is representing you also (because he keeps both sides). This means the owner keeps more of the sale proceeds and therefore might be willing to take a lower price for the home.

Would you consider the bracket that holds the headlights "fairing" on a motorcycle?

I won an auction and it said it was motorcycle headlight and assembly. In the picture was the headlights and the bracket that holds the headlights. The person stated does not include "fairing" To me fairing on a motorcycle is the plastic pieces, not the bracket that holds the headlights. Am I right? I feel like I was ripped off!!!

Hi,

I would also feel ripped off. The part that holds the Headlight is normally called a "Cradle" and is not part of the fairing in any way. By stating Headlight and Assembly, the seller has commited to selling this part.

The Cradle does double as a Mirror and Fairing mount on many motorcycles though.

If you purchased a full fairing from a motorcycle shop, you would not get the cradle with it.

Where is the location for car auction in or around Tacoma?
I want to know if police or government has any auctions where they sell seized cars?
If police is not directly involved in auction, how do they get rid of vehicles they have seized? do they give it to towing company? and those towing company has auctions ? or police is having those auctions at a particular location?

However they cost a small fee to join, but I couldn’t find any free resources online. Since the vehicles are always being sold, your signup fee is probably used to employ people to keep the site up to date.

I have a 1967 Ford Thunderbird that was left on my property. I own the house but rent the land. My landlord evicted the previous tenants and they left behind a car and a boat. I got rid of the boat but I want to fix up the car and I don’t want to put any money into it before I get the title. How do I get the title without putting the car through a public auction?

Check w/ your local DMV, But in actuality, how it should work is that your landlord is the one who should be doing this, as it was abandoned on his property, not yours , then it’s his decision to give it to you or sell it…… check forlength of time vehicle has been left……different states have their ownd definitions for this

Looking at purchasing 2 Ford trucks from an auction out of state. It says there are no keys available. The truck is between ‘00-’03. If I purchase these trucks how might I get keys for them?

I want to repair a motorcycle and I want to buy it at an online auction. Has anyone had any good luck with any particular site? Or do you know of one that is good? Suggestions?
well, if you crash a motorcycle, the engine could still be in perfect condition. you salvage the engine and put it in a new frame, it’s like the accident never happened. And besides, with the right materials and tools, you can fix almost anything.

Ok here goes Bikers inc is a good place and so is kim motor all you have to do is search motor cycle salvage to find several places now for the bike you will what to change your mind once you see the prices involed to rebuild a sled from a wreak the only salvage bikes that are worth the effort are theft bikes that havent been stripped repainting alone is over a grand a good frame will cost around 3500.00 and thats not complete if you are interested in a harley try hdtrader.com (ps this will also take you to the 2 sites mentioned above and they have other brands on there sites) gl hope it helps

One of my friends found a 2006 Chevy Silverado Z71 with 11,000 miles on it. He only paid about $10,000 for it too. A lot of my friends have also found themselves in a similar situation. What I’m wondering is if there is a certain place I can look to find the same deals.

Where can I find local auctions and such.

Or any tips you have for finding cheap cars/trucks.

same as tax auctions? okay so if u go to a govt and im sure theres alot of serious buyers..and I heard mostly the houses or autos etc. are not in good shape….but if ur gonna invest wouldnt this be a better way to go than buying regular property off the bat? from what I heard you have to pay the remaining mortgage so how about if u payed someone to NOT pay there mortgage so that u could re sell it and then SPLIT profits??? so in the end u can possibly make more money …would that work or is it more to it buying government auction stuff???

You really roll the dice at auctions. You can get dirt cheap stuff, but be prepared to fix it up. Do you homework and you’ll be fine.

I looked on here for vehicles 03-06 with under 100,000 miles and within 75 miles of my area. I have seen the best deals from this website. And just because they advertise one price doesn’t mean you cant get it for less.

make sure to compare the asking prices with the prices on kbb.com (kelly blue book) or nada.com

I bought a 2006 Ford Taurus with 99,000 miles on it for 50% of it’s retail price from a buy here pay here. I had to drive 70 miles to see it, and test drive it. But it was well worth it. It was a $8,000 car. I love it! I have 102,000 miles on it now.

there’s not one everyfew months the cycle auction comes to town

forget going there. There are people from all over the world yes all over the world there.
I went last year and could not believe the stupid prices these people were paying
they drove up the prices in bidding wars just to see who could pay more and last longer

2003 wrecked Hyabusa’s going for 8000
2004-05/06 636’s going for 7000+
just plain stupid

What do you think of this year’s edition of Barrett Jackson? Do you think that that their were any real steals in the auction? Do you think the boat package was a bargin? (I do) Are you surprised with the top seller? What about Robosaurus did it belong in this auction? Last I must say whoever had the Jeep up for sell on Tuesday feels horrible that he only got 4,000 for it and was the low seller.

I think Barrett Jackson’s gone downhill in recent years. This year was horrible with the constant begging to bid more. The auctioneer would say going once twice, third and final call, and… suddenly a guy on stage would grab the mike and say "let me just add". When that didn’t work, "folks you’re missing a great opportunity here", then " this car is worth much more". They have been doing this a lot in recent years, but this year it was like every car. Especially the Mustang Shelby owned. "You’re only paying $500,000 for a car worth a million". Who says it’s worth a million? It’s worth what someone is willing to pay, and I didn’t see anyone willing to pay anywhere close to 1 million. They spent like 6 minutes begging with this car, compared to the what 30 seconds all the other cars get on the block.
That being said, I though Shelby’s personal Mustang would go for more than what it did ($625,000 ?) considering his Cobra went for 5 million last year. Also, the Presidential Limo ($250,000) I thought was a decent deal. There was a major steal today (Sunday). a 1970 GTO went for like $35,000, even with their begging!

Is there such a thing?

Auctions are more hassle than using a dealer. At least with a dealer you have someone to go back to if you have a problem. Auctions are a "cash and carry, it’s yours now" situation.

The best way to locate a good used truck is to find an individual seller using AutoTrader or Craigslist.

Hey! Shopping for another motorcycle, I had to give my last one up
I just got off a katana a few months ago, and I’d like something a little lighter this time around. My favorite bike ever is an r6, but I definitely can’t afford a 2006+.

Any ideas? Are auctions ever a good idea, and where might I find those?
I’m located in north Georgia.

I want to buy a CNG car from the US Government auto auctions. How can I get CNG for this car? Is it possible to fit something at my home to fill my car tank, or must I go to a CNG ’station’ (like a gas station) to purchase it? Thanks and God bless you.

Questar is the local natural gas company where I live.
They sell some of their used CNG vehicles occasionally at TNT auctions.

You won’t find off-lease vehicles at a government auction, but you might find them at a public auto auction. Here’s more about it:

Government auctions sell surplus, replaced, and seized vehicles, but not off-lease vehicles. Many off-lease vehicles are sold at dealer-only auctions that are not open to the public.

You can get an idea of a fair auction price for the Malibu by going to www.kbb.com and looking up the "trade-in" value.

I am buying it at an auction and can’t get a hold of anyone to ask, but is there someone who can PLEASE give me the overall length from the back of the prop to the front of the trailer, Even a rough measurement, I’m not sure how far the trailer tongue sticks past the front and how far the motor sticks past the back of the boat and trailer so I need a measurement to make sure it will fit in my garage. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The boat is 19′, + – 6", add aprox 2′ for the outdrive, for a total of 21′. You will need about 18 – 19′6" between the winch mast and the end of the bunks/rollers. You also need minimum of 30" forward of the mast for "swing room. This makes your trailered LOA 22 – 24′. Good luck at the auction, quit at $750

I have a white 2003 F-350 I need to get $18,500 out of and thats below NADA for tradein and retail. I have advertised on gobs of web classifieds, Autotrader, E-Bay Auction, Posted signs. I cant rid of this thing. Anybody got any suggestions or hints. Anything youve done to sell something successfully. Maybe its the gas prices. I dont know. Thanks in advance.
Y ou guys are on the money, most want diesels, People have called , none have personally looked at it. So no serious bites yet, Thanks for all your suggestions it gives me some ideas.
Oh forgot it has a Triton V-10! GAS HOG!

does it have a gas engine? by the sound of the price it does gas engines in a 350 series is hard to sell most people prefer a diesel at my lot we carry probably 1 gas to 30 diesels u may consider advert. in a magazine or something (depend on your location) geared toward farming and or construction etc. landscaper any publication geared toward that may help and no dont cut your losses it will sell in the right market if you are under current prices and advertise it it will sell

I’d like to pick up a motorcycle on the cheap. I know there are auctions that police do, but I’m not sure how to find out when or where they are.
I’m in the Wayne County area of Michigan, so anything around metro-Detroit would be ideal. Any suggestions?

Your question has a very easy answer my friend. Peep this site – www.governmentauctions.org – I just moved to the south and had no car – so i joined them – found a car i liked and boom! seized cars are usually in fine shape too.
